As we begin the scheduling process at Decatur High School for the 2010-2011 year, we want to ensure that all 9th and 10th graders and their families have the information they need to select the appropriate elective courses required as part of the IB
Middle Years Programme. Beginning in 2010, all 9th and 10th grade students must have instruction in each of the eight IB MYP subject areas: Language A—English, Humanities (social studies), Sciences, Mathematics, Language B—Spanish, Technology, the Arts, and Physical Education.
Students will be scheduled appropriately in their four core subjects and Language B; but they will self-select elective courses in Technology, the Arts, and Physical Education. A variety of elective courses will be offered to meet the IB requirements, including courses in Career, Technical and Agricultural Education, and in band, chorus, drama, and visual art. It is important to note that 9th and 10th graders who have already earned a Carnegie unit in Health and Personal Fitness must select an additional Physical Education election for their 9th and/or 10th grade schedule.
A typical schedule for a 9th grade student might include 9th Grade Literature and Composition (all year) American Government and Civics/World Geography (one semester each), Algebra Based Physics (all year), Mathematics I (all year), Spanish II (all year), Drama I/Team Sports (one semester each), plus one additional course. Technology for 9th grade is integrated into 9th Grade Literature and Composition.
A typical schedule for a 10th grade student might include American Literature and Composition (all year) World History (all year), Chemistry (all year), Mathematics II (all year), Spanish III (all year), a technology course, and Art II/Aerobics (one semester each).
