College Recruiting Tips from Coach Rigger
There is a lot to be proud of about DHS boy's lacrosse, but the number one thing is the number of our former players who have continued to play in college. Lacrosse offers lots of opportunities in college:
College Club — think GT, UGA, Emory, GSU, etc. Most big southern schools have club lax. Club teams are loosely affiliated with the school, but are not "school teams." Level of play varies, but is good at the top level (GT and UGA are both high level club teams). Expect to pay to play.
Division 1 — the "big time" - Syracuse, Navy, Duke, Johns Hopkins, UNC, etc. Schools have 12.5 scholarships. Most players are on partial scholarship. Level of play varies — the biggest difference between D1 and D3 is in the size and speed of the athlete, not lacrosse skill. Southern options are limited but growing. Jacksonville U., Presbyterian and Mercer are the close by options.
Division 2 — generally smaller schools than D1. Schools have 10 scholarships. Not as selective lax skill wise as D1. Fairly large number of schools in the southeast — Limestone (SC), Wingate, Catawba, Queens, St. Andrews, Belmont Abbey, Mars Hill (NC), Seton Hill (FL)
Division 3 — lots of small schools all over the eastern half of the country. No athletic scholarships, but most offer academic and/or need-based scholarships. Wide variability in lax skill required. High level D3 teams are on par with some D1. In state options are Berry and Oglethorpe. Close by options are Birmingham-Southern, Sewanee, Rollins, Guilford, and Greensboro.
If you want to play in college, you need to plan for it and work at it:
- Follow a college prep track in HS and get good grades. Especially for D3 (there are 3 times more D3 college players than D1), academics are going to be critical to broaden your choices and earn a scholarship to make it affordable.
- Look for opportunities to play lax away from DHS — summer/fall travel teams and out of state camps are the best way.
- Rising juniors and seniors should plan to attend a "Recruiting Camp." These camps attract hundreds of college coaches who come to evaluate players. Georgia is on the lacrosse "frontier". You should not expect college coaches to find you — you have to find them. Players who want to stay in the south should consider the Dixie 150 recruiting camp. Players who want to play D3 and don't mind the idea of going up north should consider Top Star. Players who want to go for the big time should shoot for Blue Chip or 205 (these camps are selective — you will have to be GOOD to get to go).
- Rising 9th and 10th graders should look for a travel team for summer and/or fall tournaments. Also consider attending a camp at a college that interests you. That is a good way to get to know the campus/town plus early exposure to the coaching staff — who knows, maybe they'll notice you.
