Decatur High School - National Honor Society
In evaluating potential National Honor Society members, the Faculty Council reviews information regarding leadership, service, and character. The leadership criterion is considered highly important for membership selection. The student who exercises leadership exemplifies a positive attitude, is highly independent, accepts responsibility, and demonstrates leadership in the classroom, at work, and in school or community activities. The criterion of service is often defined in terms of the value of contributions. Common questions are: What contributions have the candidate make to school, classmates, and community? What is the student’s attitude toward service? The character component is evident if the student consistently exemplifies desirable qualities of behavior, upholds principles or morality
and ethics, and demonstrates the highest standards of honesty and reliability.
The selection process for membership begins with this letter acknowledging your academic qualifications. Your name is then presented to the entire faculty fortheir recommendations. The NHS Faculty Council, whose decision will be based on comments from the entire faculty, will determine the ultimate approval of your membership. To help them make their decision, you are asked to submit information about your leadership and service activities and about your values and ideals. Using the Student Activity Information Form, nominees are to complete the form and turned it in by the specified date.
Responses should be TYPED. If the information form is not returned by the specified date, the nominee will not be considered for membership (NO EXCEPTIONS, this is a strict deadline). The rubric for the form is also attached.
Membership in the National Honor Society is both an honor and a responsibility. Students selected for membership are expected to continue to demonstrate the qualities of scholarship, leadership, service, and character with behavior that is honorable, responsible, and generous to others.
